If you are moving house, relocating an office or scheduling a delivery along Mombasa Road in the coming weeks, build extra time into your plan. A section of Mombasa Road (A8) near the Highway Educational Complex at Bellevue is under a temporary partial closure while road works are carried out.
KeNHA announced that the affected section would be temporarily and interchangeably closed on both carriageways from August 10 to September 14, 2026. The works are for construction of a box culvert, with motorists continuing to use the lanes that remain open while traffic is managed through the area.
Where the Mombasa Road closure is
The affected section is at the Highway Educational Complex near Bellevue on Mombasa Road. The closure does not shut the entire road. Instead, KeNHA says the available two lanes will be provided interchangeably as construction progresses.
That matters for moving trucks because the road remains usable, but journey times can become less predictable when traffic is compressed into fewer lanes or redirected around active works.
How the closure can affect a moving day
A home or office move normally depends on several linked time windows: the moving crew arrival, loading, building access, caretaker or security clearance, lift bookings, truck parking and unloading at the destination. Even a moderate road delay can push the rest of the schedule later.
If your move uses Mombasa Road, Bellevue, South B, South C, Industrial Area, Nairobi West, Imara Daima, Embakasi, Syokimau, Mlolongo or nearby connecting routes, it is sensible to plan for possible delays around the affected section rather than relying only on the fastest map estimate.
Leave earlier than your normal travel time suggests
For moves that must pass through Bellevue, give the truck and crew a realistic buffer before any fixed access deadline. Early departures are especially useful for larger moves because they provide more daylight for unloading and leave room for delays without forcing the final stages of the move into the evening.
If your destination has a strict moving window, work backwards from the latest permitted arrival time and include loading time, traffic, fuel stops and building access procedures.
Confirm the route on the morning of the move
Road works can change lane access from one day to the next. Before departure, check the latest guidance from KeNHA and current traffic conditions for Mombasa Road and the surrounding network.
Do not assume that an alternative route will always be faster. A diversion that works well for a private car may not be ideal for a loaded moving truck, particularly where there are narrow roads, height restrictions, difficult turns or limited truck access.
Tell your mover about building access restrictions
If you are moving into or out of an apartment, office block, gated estate or commercial property, tell the moving company about any fixed access hours before move day. This includes lift bookings, loading-bay reservations, security clearance and restrictions on trucks entering the property.
When a road closure is active, these details help the moving team decide whether to adjust the departure time, crew size or loading sequence.
Protect fragile items for a stop-start journey
Road works and compressed traffic can mean more braking, slower movement and longer time in transit. Furniture, televisions, mirrors, artwork, glass and other fragile items should be properly wrapped and secured inside the truck before departure.
Heavy items should be positioned so that they cannot shift during braking. Sensitive electronics and documents should also be protected against dust and moisture during loading and unloading.
Keep essentials with you
Do not pack medication, identification documents, chargers, keys, water or other immediate essentials deep inside the moving truck. Keep a small essentials bag with you so that an unexpected delay does not leave you without the items you need during the journey.
For office moves, coordinate both ends of the relocation
Commercial relocations are especially sensitive to timing because both the old and new premises may have loading-bay rules, security procedures or limited access hours. If your office move uses Mombasa Road, confirm who will be available at both locations and how delays will be communicated.
It is also useful to identify critical equipment that should be moved and set up first so the business can resume essential operations even if the overall move takes longer than expected.
Plan around the active closure period
The Bellevue works are scheduled to continue until September 14, 2026. KeNHA has advised motorists to follow the temporary traffic management plan and cooperate with police officers and traffic marshals at the site.
If your move is flexible, the closure period is one factor to consider when choosing your moving date. If the date is fixed, the better approach is to plan around the road works with a realistic route, departure time and contingency buffer.
Moving along Mombasa Road during the road works
A temporary road closure does not have to derail a move. The key is to treat transport as part of the moving plan rather than as the final step after packing.
When requesting a quotation, share your exact origin, destination, preferred moving date, house or office size and any building access restrictions. That gives the moving team enough information to plan the vehicle, crew and timing around current road conditions.
